Wedding Photography – my approach…..

2 January 2021

The first thing to say is that every wedding is very different, unique in fact. So to that end I offer a wedding photography service that is built completely around the wants and needs of the couple, whilst also offering advice, guidance and my own experience.

Your Day……. Your Way

I don’t sell ‘off the shelf’ wedding photography packages, they just don’t work for me or the couples themselves, I really don’t like the thought of restricting couples to a certain number of images, if it is a good image then I will include it. Looking back my last six couples received an average of 150 professionally edited images each. My pricing is based on a number of things such as the length of time I will be working on the day, any travel or accommodation needed plus contracting an assistant photographer if one is needed. Everything else such as venue visits, liaising with celebrants, additional meetings with the couple are all included so there are few extras or usually none at all in fact.

Don’t shoot what it looks like. Shoot what it feels like.” – – David Alan Harvey

I didn’t start out with any ambitions of being a wedding photographer, I don’t suppose many wedding photographers do. I was simply asked to shoot the wedding of a friend of a friend who knew I was handy with a camera. It wasn’t a small wedding either, it was a full ceremony, followed by a large reception at a well known wedding venue in the countryside, so a full day, a long day, but a very happy happy one.

I didn’t really know where to start, I didn’t know any wedding photographers and even if I did would they have shared their experience and secrets? So, I decided to do a lot of research and then just to stick to my basic principals, attention to detail, planning, listening and above all be professional. And it turns out, after many weddings, that is still how I approach every wedding even now. This usually involves a couple of meetings with the couple where I buy the coffee and we talk about their day, most recently these have been virtual meetings where I don’t have to buy the coffee! I make notes, lots of notes….. when, where, who, timings, numbers and so on, as well as discussing what parts of the day they want covered. We will of course talk about photography styles, agree to swap ideas on Pintrest and so on.

With the wedding booked I then liaise directly with the venues, other suppliers and start planning my approach to the day.

“If I can dig deeper and show more of who people are, aside from it being a wedding day, then I feel I’ve succeeded.”

– Tyler Wirken

Your day will be unique to you and who you are, and I will cover it in a way which suits you. I regularly cover every aspect of the day including bride and groom (or bride/bride, groom/groom) preparations, arrival at the ceremony, the ceremony itself, the confetti shot, family groups, cutting the cake, speeches, first dance and all that goes on in between. I usually try and get the couple off to somewhere private away from all the glare for a short time for some special photo’s and I also offer the couple a pre-wedding shoot somewhere important to them in the weeks before the wedding to help them familiarise themselves with being in front of the cameras.

The finished images are delivered within six weeks in a digital format in a beautifully packaged unique Wedding Photography box. There are two sets of images, one in high resolution full size and another set exactly the same but in a smaller file size ideal for sharing across your socials. I can create a password protected page on my website which you can pass around friends and family to save you sharing heaps of images with everyone multiple times too.
